Charleston Downs West Liberty

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Feb. 1, 2025) — The University of Charleston women's basketball team delivered a strong all-around performance in a 70-54 victory over West Liberty on Saturday afternoon at the H. Bernard Wehrle Arena.

Charleston (12-8, 8-5 MEC) took control early and never looked back, outshooting West Liberty (7-13, 5-8 MEC) 53.6% to 29.3% from the field while dominating the rebounding battle 47-22. Jamia Nesmith led the Golden Eagles with 22 points and six rebounds, while Sydney Bolles added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Paris Stokes chipped in 12 points and three assists.

How It Happened:
First Quarter:
 Charleston set the tone early, jumping out to a 20-8 lead behind efficient inside play. Nesmith and Stokes combined for multiple baskets in the paint, while Bolles knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead.

Second Quarter: The Golden Eagles maintained their momentum, shooting 61.5% from the field in the frame. Despite West Liberty improving offensively, Charleston held strong defensively and took a 37-26 lead into halftime.

Third Quarter: Charleston continued to pull away in the third, outscoring the Hilltoppers 17-12. The Golden Eagles shot an impressive 70% from the field, with Nesmith leading the charge inside while Bolles and Kiley Graham provided additional scoring.

Fourth Quarter: Charleston kept West Liberty at bay, maintaining its defensive intensity while securing the victory. Candela Nevares García hit a key three-pointer, and the Golden Eagles controlled the glass down the stretch to seal the 16-point win.
