Charleston Splits Weekend Series with Harvard, Phillips Named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston men's volleyball team (7-10, 4-2 EIVA) split its weekend series against Harvard (6-7, 4-2 EIVA), bouncing back from a five-set loss on Friday with a dominant four-set victory on Saturday at the Wehrle Innovation Center.

How it Happened:
After falling to the Crimson in a tightly contested 3-2 battle on Friday (20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 17-25, 11-15), the Golden Eagles responded with a decisive 3-1 win on Saturday (25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22).

Senior middle blocker Korben Phillips was a key presence at the net for Charleston, capping off the weekend with a career-high 16 points in Saturday's win. Phillips totaled 13 kills on .500 hitting, three aces, five digs, and nine blocks, including five solo. His standout performance earned him his first career EIVA Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Charleston's offensive charge was led by Max Nissen, who recorded 21 kills in Saturday's victory, while Kai Cousins and Joonatan Salpakari added nine apiece. Setter Paul Stommel dished out 40 assists, and the Golden Eagles outblocked the Crimson 11-5 in the win.

Despite Friday's five-set defeat, Charleston saw strong contributions from Cousins (21 kills) and Nissen (19 kills). The Golden Eagles claimed sets two and three but struggled to contain Harvard's attack in the decisive fifth set.

Charleston returns home on Friday, March 14, to face Tusculum University at 7:00 p.m. in the Wehrle Innovation Center.
