Charleston Defeats Cross-County Rival Yellow Jackets in a Midweek Sweep

Charleston, W.Va. – Charleston swept a midweek series from cross-county rivals West Virginia State Yellow Jackets.  
 
GAME 1
 
The Basics:
Location: Watt Powell Annex
Score: UC 1, WVSU 0
Records: UC 20-11 (12-7 MEC) WV State 11-22 (3-16 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
Addison Mass struck out 13 batters as the pitcher led the Golden Eagles past WV State 1-0 on Wednesday. Mass surrendered one hit and zero runs over seven innings while walking five.

A double by Brittny Ogg put the Golden Eagles on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Autumn Hall took the loss for WV State. The starter went six innings, surrendering one run on four hits, striking out none and walking two. Leadoff hitter Ella Zucchero led Charleston with two hits in two at bats. Ogg went 1-for-3 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in.

GAME 2

How it Happened:
The Charleston Golden Eagles beat WV State 6-5 on Wednesday after taking the lead late in the game.

A triple by Olivia Bell put WV State on the board in the top of the first. A home run to center field by Hannah Meyer gave the Golden Eagles the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the first. Charleston then added one run in the second after Ella Zucchero singled down the left field line.

In the top of the third inning, WV State went back into the lead after Autumn Hall doubled to right field, Bell doubled to center field, Kylie Price doubled to center field, and Kaylee Byus singled, each scoring one run.

The Golden Eagles then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a double by Meyer, and an error.
 
The game was tied at five in the bottom of the sixth when Kayla Moran scored after tagging up from second on an Ella Zucchero sacrifice fly to deep right center field.

Laila Varney earned the win for Golden Eagles. The reliever surrendered zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out three and walking none. Kaleigh Murphy took the loss for WV State. The starting pitcher went five and one-third innings, surrendering six runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out one and walking two. Addison Mass threw one inning of zero-run ball for Golden Eagles in relief. The hurler surrendered zero hits, striking out none and walking none.

Meyer drove the middle of the lineup, leading Golden Eagles with three runs batted in. The number three hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Moran, Meyer, and Zucchero each collected two hits for Golden Eagles. Taylor Hodson stole two bases. Golden Eagles stole three bases in the game.

Charleston will host Point Park and Salem University this coming weekend at the Watt Powell Annex.
