Charleston Falls Twice to George Mason to Close Out Regular Season

Fairfax, Va. – The Golden Eagles dropped two EIVA contest to George Mason on the road to concluded regular season conference play.

The Basics:
Location: Eagle Bank Arena
Score: UC 0, GM 3
Records: UC 12-15 (5-6 EIVA), George Mason 14-12 (5-6 EIVA)
 
How it Happened:
Max Nissen led the Golden Eagles as the opposite collected fifteen kills, two blocks and two aces in the three-set loss to George Mason on Friday. The Golden Eagles trailed majority of the first set but evened the score and even took the lead late in the set to control at 22-20. Unfortunately, Charleston could not hold on as the Patriots fought back and extended the set to 24-24, George Mason taking the final two points for a 26-24 first set victory.
 
Set two was close, Charleston holding a lead midway through the set at 14-11, but the Patriots went on a seven-point run to gain the lead at 18-14. Charleston then scored the next three to bring the set close once more at 18-17, but the Patriots closed the set out with a 7-3 run to take a second set victory 25-20.
 
The Golden Eagles were in full control of the third set, jumping out to a 13-5 lead, but the Patriots did not waiver and slowly fought their way back in the set, evening the score at 15-15 after a 10-2 run. The remainder of the set featured points traded back and forth, the Patriots eventually taking the third set 25-23 and completing the victory 3-0 over the Golden Eagles.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
Max Nissen once again was a standout for Charleston in Saturday's match, Nissen collecting 21 kills and two aces. Right behind Nissen was Freshman outside Kai Cousins with 18 kills and 8 digs in the four-set loss.
 
Set one was close but at the middle of the set the Patriots gained a slight edge over the Golden Eagles and did not look back, taking the first set 25-20. Set two was back and forth, the teams tied at 21-21 until a crucial service error gave Mason the edge 22-21 over Charleston. The Patriots scored three of the next four points to take the second set 25-22 and lead the match 2-0 over Charleston.
 
The Golden Eagles took the driver seat in the third set highlighted by a mid-set 7-1 run to take a controlling 17-9 lead. The Golden Eagles closed the set out 25-16 over the Patriots, still trailing the match 2-1.
 
The Golden Eagles and the Patriots battled in set four, trading sideouts until Mason went on a 5-0 run to gain control of the set 19-16 over Charleston. The slight edge would be the Golden Eagles kryptonite as the eventually fell by four, 25-21 over the Patriots to close out the regular season.

Charleston will head to the EIVA tournament hosted by Princeton this season. #5 Charleston will take on #4 George Mason in the First Round of the tournament, game time is set for 5:00PM Wednesday, April 23rd.
