Golden Eagles Suffer Pair of Losses to Bobcats

Charleston, W.Va. -The Golden Eagles dropped a pair of games to the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.

GAME 1

The Basics:
Location: Watt Powell Annex
Score: UC 1, WVWC 5
Records: UC 17-10 (9-6 MEC) West Virginia Wesleyan 11-24 (6-7 MEC)

How it Happened:
In game one of the afternoon the Golden Eagles struggled to find their offense, only managing four hits in the seven-inning game compared to Wesleyans thirteen hits. The Bobcats crossed the plate first in the top of the third inning, plating two runs on four hits. The Bobcats then sat the Golden Eagles down in order for the one-two-three inning.

Addison Mass kept the Bobcats off the score sheet for the next several innings sending her team to the plate in the bottom of the sixth trailing 2-0. After grounding into a fielder's choice, Ella Zucchero showed heads up base running taking second on a pass ball and advancing all the way to third on the play. Bianca Polistina then did a job at the plate, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field and scoring Zucchero from third to cut the deficit 2-1.

Despite cutting the lead in half, the Golden Eagles headed back out on defense in the top of the seventh where they allowed the Bobcats to score three, extending their lead 5-1 and sending Charleston to the plate with just three outs to use. Charleston threatened as Lindsey Phares was walked and then Reagan West doubled, putting runners on second and third with one out, but the Bobcats got out of the jam as they recorded the next two outs. Wesleyan took the victory 5-1 over Charleston in game one of the afternoon.

GAME 2

The Basics:
Location: Watt Powell Annex
Score: UC 0, WVWC 2
Records: UC 17-11 (9-7 MEC) West Virginia Wesleyan 12-24 (7-7 MEC)

How it Happened:
Game two was a pitcher's duel, with both teams staying off the score board for the first four innings of play. It was in the top of the fifth that the first run was scored, the Bobcats taking a 1-0 lead after capitalizing on one hit and one Charleston error. The Bobcats then struck again in the top of the sixth, plating their second run of the game. The leadoff batter got aboard after singling up the middle, then was moved over to second on a textbook sacrifice bunt. Charleston then got the second out of the inning by inducing a fly ball, but the Bobcats had the last word as a pinch hitter doubled to right field to score the runner from second and extend the lead 2-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Allison Rubal led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kyra Gooler. Unfortunately, Charleston could not advance the runner home, eventually falling 2-0 to the Bobcats. Chloe Elliot was credited with the loss as Charleston would fall to 9-7 in MEC play.
