Charleston, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles dropped two home EIVA Conference games to the Highlanders of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) this past weekend.

The Basics:

Score: UC 1, NJIT 3
Records: UC 11-13 (5-4 EIVA), NJIT 9-12 (3-2 EIVA)
How it Happened:
Charleston took a commanding victory in set one of the anticipated matchup between the visiting Highlanders and the home Golden Eagles. After battling back-and-forth for the first portion of the set, Charleston then went on a seven-point run to jump out ahead and eventually take the set victory 25-17.
Set two went in favor of the Highlanders, NJIT using a late set run to propel them towards the finish line. At 19-19, the Highlanders closed out the set with a 6-2 run to take the final set score 25-21 and even the match at one set a piece.
Set three was much of the same, the teams trading sideouts for majority of the set until NJIT went on a 9-4 run to close out the set 25-20. Both teams had 14 kills in the set but the Highlanders saw a better hitting percentage at .500 compared to Charleston's .400.
With a 2-1 set advantage, the Highlanders looked to take set four from the Golden Eagles. The set began much like the others with the teams trading points back-and-forth. The Highlanders pulled away midway through the set when they went on a 6-3 run to jump ahead 17-12. The sudden deficit was too much to overcome for the Golden Eagles and they eventually fell 25-17 in the fourth set, falling 3-1 in the match to NJIT.

Records: UC 11-14 (5-5 EIVA), NJIT 10-12 (4-2 EIVA)
How it Happened:
Saturday was Senior Day for the Golden Eagles Men's Volleyball squad, and the team looked to bounce back after suffering a loss the night prior. Unfortunately for Charleston, the Highlanders held the tempo in set one, taking the set by a score of 25-20, hitting an impressive .476 compared to Charleston's .091 including ten attack errors by the Golden Eagles.
Set two featured 66 total points, NJIT eventually taking the set 34-32. The entire set was point for point, Charleston falling just short to trail 2-0 in the match.
Set three was another close set, but the Highlanders once again got the best of the Golden Eagles, the final set score 25-23.
Max Nissen led the Golden Eagles with 16 kills followed by Kai Cousins with 12 for Charleston. Paul Stommel added 38 assists along with 3 blocks and 7 digs.

Charleston will head to Crestview Hills, KY on Thursday evening to take on the Saints of Thomas More set for a 6:00PM first serve.
