How It Happened
Following two tough non-conference matchups, the Golden Eagles returned home for their MEC opener against Davis & Elkins. The Senators came out strong, putting Charleston under pressure early. Goalkeeper and captain Sofia Chaverra was called into action within the first 10 minutes, making a pair of crucial saves to keep the game scoreless.
Charleston gradually gained control of possession, and transfer Allison Freese registered UC's first shot on target. Both teams made multiple substitutions as the half progressed, and the game turned physical with neither side willing to back down. In the final 10 minutes of the first half, Hannah Goes, Ava Bourne, and Anna Gregor each had scoring chances, but couldn't find the breakthrough. The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
The second half began with a quick yellow card issued to Davis & Elkins, and the midfield battle resumed. The deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute when Ciara Casamento delivered a pinpoint corner kick that found Jamie Bland, who headed home the opening goal. The momentum firmly swung in UC's favor. Just five minutes later, Bland turned provider, setting up freshman Mya Mills, who curled a stunning strike into the top corner to double the lead.
Charleston continued to apply pressure, but the Senators remained dangerous on the counter. Chaverra made a few more key stops to preserve the clean sheet and secure the Golden Eagles' first win of the season.
Despite being outshot 14-11, UC made their chances count. Both goalkeepers finished with five saves. Bland led the way offensively with a goal and an assist.
