Golden Eagles Come Up Short in Crosstown Rivalry Battle

Charleston, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Women's Soccer team continued Mountain East Conference play with a tough matchup against last season's MEC Tournament champions, West Virginia State. Despite a determined effort, the Golden Eagles fell 2-0 in a physical, hard-fought contest.

The Basics
  • Location: Welch Athletic Complex
  • Final Score: UC 0, WVSU 2
  • Records: Charleston (1-3, 1-1 MEC), West Virginia State (2-2, 2-0 MEC)
How It Happened
Coming off their first win of the season, the Golden Eagles were hoping to build momentum against their crosstown rivals. However, West Virginia State struck early, capitalizing on a fast start with a goal just six minutes into the match. The Yellow Jackets continued to apply pressure, registering two more quick attempts before Charleston settled into the game. UC began to find its rhythm around the 15-minute mark, with Li-Lou Debaecker drawing fouls and firing the team's first shot. The remainder of the first half was a physical, back-and-forth affair. Emotions ran high, and the referee issued multiple yellow cards in an attempt to control the intensity. In the final minutes before the break, Charleston came close to equalizing. Alison Rothmann and Linsey Hackney both forced outstanding saves from the WVSU goalkeeper, keeping the visitors ahead 1-0 at halftime.

Charleston came out in the second half looking to shift momentum, but West Virginia State remained relentless. Two early shots tested goalkeeper Sofia Chaverra—one requiring a save, the other rattling the crossbar. Despite Chaverra's efforts, the Yellow Jackets doubled their lead in the 62nd minute after sustained pressure. The Golden Eagles pushed forward in search of a goal, but WVSU held firm defensively and threatened on the counter. Chaverra made several more key saves to keep Charleston within reach, but the home side couldn't find the breakthrough. The match ended 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
