How It Happened
After a midweek loss at home, Charleston came into Saturday's match eager to bounce back and did just that with a 1-0 win over a Glenville squad still searching for its first victory of the season.
The Golden Eagles came out aggressive from the start. Early efforts from Jamie Bland and Riley Crowe forced saves from the Pioneers' goalkeeper. Just 13 minutes into the match, UC earned its first corner, and they made it count. For the second consecutive week, Casamento delivered a pinpoint cross that found Bland, who headed it home to give Charleston the early 1-0 lead. The goal sparked a response from the home side. Glenville State created four solid chances in the next 15 minutes, two of which were turned away by UC goalkeeper Sofia Chaverra. Both teams made changes late in the half, but neither side was able to generate more offense before the break.
The second half saw a physical, back-and-forth battle as Charleston looked to protect its narrow lead. Glenville's best opportunity came early in the half when a powerful shot struck the crossbar. The intensity picked up from there, with Bland picking up a yellow card in the 62nd minute as the match grew more heated. Despite consistent pressure from the Pioneers, Chaverra remained composed, making several key saves to preserve the shutout. Defenders Hannah Goes and Allison Rothmann anchored the backline once again, both playing the full 90 minutes and putting in relentless defensive shifts.
In the end, UC held firm and secured a hard-fought 1-0 win on the road.
Glenville outshot Charleston 13-6, but the Golden Eagles made their one goal count. Chaverra finished the match with four saves and another clean sheet, while Bland's game-winner marked her second in as many weeks.
