Bridgeport, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles travelled to Bridgeport, WV this past Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with Salem University.
The Basics:
Location: Bridge Sports Complex
Score: UC 3, SU 1
Records: UC 5-0-2 (3-0-1 MEC) Salem 1-3-3
How it Happened:
Charleston had the first shot of the game within 20 seconds, but Martin Echarren shot wide from just outside the area. In the third minute, Salem had their first shot of the contest, but it was well saved by Francisco Rodriguez in the UC goal. The breakthrough didn't come until the 25th minute when a Sam Newell corner found the head of Samuel Montes. The effort was cleared off the line but Montes was there to finish the rebound and put the Golden Eagles ahead. The lead was doubled in the 39th minute after Salem gave a free kick away on the edge of their area. Martin Echarren stepped up and fired a curled effort past the keeper to make it 2-0. The scoreline stayed that way into the half time interval.
Eleven minutes into the second half it was 3-0 as a cross was only half cleared, and Paul Hoste was on hand to head into the top left corner for his first of the season. It should've been comfortable from there on out for the Golden Eagles, but that didn't turn out to be the case. In the 64th minute, the Tigers pulled one back. They played through the Golden Eagles and when a shot from the edge of the area was parried by Rodriguez, Caleb Christner was there to capitalize. Following the goal, Salem dictated large parts of the remainder of the game. With 90 seconds to go, Cristobal Roa was sent off for a second yellow card for delaying the restart of play, however the Golden Eagles held out for the 3-1 victory.
Up Next:
