UC Falls to Walsh in Second Match of the Season

Charleston, W.Va. – The University of Charleston women's soccer team hosted their second home match of the season on Saturday, falling 4-1 to a strong Walsh University squad at the Welch Athletic Complex.

The Basics
  • Location: Welch Athletic Complex
  • Final Score: UC 1, WU 4
  • Records: Charleston (0-2), Walsh (1-0)
How It Happened
The match opened with high energy from both sides, with each team registering two early shots in the first five minutes. However, momentum quickly shifted in favor of the Cavaliers, as the Golden Eagles struggled to maintain possession and push beyond midfield.
By the 15-minute mark, Walsh had fired off seven shots, with UC goalkeeper Sofia Chaverra making four early saves to keep the score level. The Golden Eagles gradually regained some composure and began to control the ball more, but were dealt a setback when captain Kaitlyn Gauze left the field due to injury. Midfielder Ciara Casamento was shown a yellow card shortly after for a foul, and UC's midfield struggled to fill the leadership gap left by Gauze. Despite heavy pressure from Walsh, Charleston held firm defensively to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
The second half told a different story. Walsh came out aggressive and sharp, while Charleston appeared sluggish out of the break. The Cavaliers broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute off a corner kick, then doubled their lead 15 minutes later. With UC unable to gain traction, Walsh continued to apply pressure and found the back of the net twice more—once in the 69th minute and again with 10 minutes remaining.
Freshman Anae Buehlmann gave Charleston something to cheer about, netting her first collegiate goal late in the match to prevent the shutout. The final whistle blew with the Cavaliers earning a convincing 4-1 road victory.
