Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Connor Hartwell

Delay Doesn’t Stop Golden Eagles

Buckhannon, W.Va.- The University of Charleston Golden Eagles travelled to Buckhannon, WV this past Wednesday for a Mountain East Conference matchup with West Virginia Wesleyan College. The weather had a say in proceedings, and the game was rescheduled for a noon kick off on Thursday.

The Basics:
Location: Cebe Ross Field
Score: UC 5, WVWC 0
Records: Charleston 11-2-0 (8-1-0 MEC) West Virginia Wesleyan 0-10-3 (0-8-2 MEC)

How it Happened:
Just four minutes into the contest, the Golden Eagles took the lead through the boot of Caio Moraes, following a short corner with Samu Montes. Moraes' cross-shot found its way into the top right corner. In the 17th minute, he and Charleston doubled their tally. A throw in was held up by Martin Echarren, and then Pedro Arbizu laid one on a plate for Moraes to hit the postage stamp once again. Charleston were not done before half time though, as Petrungaro released Samuel Marquez on the right-hand side, and he cut inside to place a deep cross on the head of Mattia Marini for the second straight game. 3-0 was the scoreline at the interval.

Into the second half and Tomas Petrungaro got himself on the scoresheet in his first game back from suspension, as Alberto Rodriguez and Miku Dawit combined down Charleston's left-hand side, before finding Petrungaro with an enticing pass. Moises Moncada was given his marching orders in the 70th minute for the Bobcats after picking up a second yellow, and two minutes later the Golden Eagles had five, as intricate play between the aforementioned Moraes and Tobias Jervelund gave the Dane his second goal of the season with a spinning finish. Jervelund was then substituted for Jacob Haynes, who came on to make his Golden Eagles first team debut. Charleston perhaps should have finished with an even more flattering scoreline, with Kato, Echarren, Petrungaro, and Suarez Monaco all having further chances, but the game finished with the Golden Eagles as 5-0 victors, adding an eighth clean sheet to their tally for the season.
