Charleston, W.Va.- The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed #12 Davis & Elkins to the WAC this past Wednesday for a Mountain East Conference matchup.
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 0, D&E 1
Records: Charleston 8-2-0 (5-1-0 MEC) Davis & Elkins 8-0-1 (6-0-1 MEC)
How it Happened:
It was a tight and tasty affair throughout between two of the top ranked teams in the nation, with Caio Moraes having a couple of sighters early with a snap shot and a free kick, neither really putting the D&E keeper to work. The first real chance of the game fell to the Senators as a ball over the top put Johan Magana through, but his volley was saved well by Luka Felix in the Golden Eagles goal. The game went into the half scoreless with both keepers making a couple of saves each.
Into the second half and Charleston came out sharper than the first. Martin Echarren had a header from a free kick saved well by Phillips in goal, and Suarez Monaco was also thwarted as the ball looked to be heading into the Senators net. The biggest chance of the game so far fell to Tomas Petrungaro in the 86th minute as he was played through by Jose Suarez Monaco. Petrungaro rounded the keeper but could not place his attempt from a tight angle on target, and the ball rolled inches wide of the far post. The game looked to be heading for a tie, until McKenzie Mason went up for a header just outside the Golden Eagles penalty area in the 87th minute. He was clearly nudged whilst in the air, causing him to fall precariously, and everyone in the WAC was waiting for the whistle to be blown for a foul. The whistle didn't come and Magana looped the ball into the Charleston net, giving the Senators the three points. Petrungaro was sent off following the conclusion of the game.
Up Next:
Up next for the Golden Eagles is a trip to Wheeling University this Sunday October 4th, with kick off scheduled for 5pm.
