Wheeling, W.Va.- The University of Charleston Golden Eagles travelled to Wheeling, WV this past Sunday for a Mountain East Conference matchup.
The Basics:
Location: Bishop Schmitt Stadium
Score: UC 3, WU 0
Records: Charleston 9-2-0 (6-1-0 MEC) Wheeling 3-7-0 (1-6-0 MEC)
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles came out the blocks quickly, taking the lead inside three minutes. Martin Echarren's good first touch from a Samuel Marquez pass set himself up perfectly to roll the ball into the corner of the Cardinals net. In the 9th minute, he doubled his and Charleston's tally, with Marquez again involved in the creation; his shot deflecting off of Echarren before find the back of the net. The closest the Golden Eagles came to adding another before half time was through Noah Paschalides, who sent a missile firing off the woodwork. Charleston went into the break two to the good.
Into the second half and the away side were moving the ball around fluidly, creating a number of chances but not being able to get a third. Echarren missed a guilt edge opportunity for his hat trick from close range, Marquez sent an effort wide, and Alberto Rodriguez and Caio Moraes also had sighters. Eventually, in the 61st minute, the Golden Eagles found the goal that all but confirmed where the points were heading. Paschalides got on the end of another move that Marquez was a part of, slipping Imtie Kamaldien down the right-hand side of the Wheeling penalty area, and a cutback pass from the end line found Paschalides who pounced to finish. Charleston saw the game out for yet another clean sheet, with only one real scare to account for as the Cardinals rattled the frame of the goal during the second half.
Up Next:
Up next for the Golden Eagles is the visit of Point Park to the WAC next Sunday, October 11. Kick-off is scheduled for 4pm.
