Athens, W.Va.- The University of Charleston Golden Eagles made the trip to Concord this Sunday for a Mountain East Conference matchup.
The Basics:
Location: Callaghan Stadium
Score: UC 2, CU 1
Records: Charleston 14-2-0 (11-1-0 MEC) Concord 11-3-2 (10-2-0 MEC)
How it Happened:
In a cagey start, there was not much football on show, with Concord's direct style making it difficult for Charleston early on. However, it was the Golden Eagles that took the lead in the 24th minute from a free kick, as a Caio Moraes delivery found the head of Pedro Arbizu, and he made no mistake in steering his effort past the Mountain Lions keeper. Six minutes later though, Concord were level. A long throw found its way to the back post and Lucas Costa found himself unmarked, allowing him to fire home the equalizer. The Mountain Lions came close to scoring again, but Pedro Arbizu was this time helping the Golden Eagles at the other end with a goal line clearance. The game went into the break level.
Into the second half and chances were still few and far between for both sides. Caio Moraes had a goal bound effort blocked, and then in the 77th minute the Golden Eagles found the go-ahead goal. A mishit Mountain Lions clearance sailed across the area to Allan Logrillo who took a touch and floated another cross onto the head of Jose Suarez Monaco. His effort was saved by the Concord keeper, but that save was adjudged to be behind the line, giving Charleston a 2-1 lead. There were a couple of scares down the other end as time ticked down, with one Concord effort going just wide of the right-hand post, and another just over the crossbar. The Golden Eagles held on for the win to the delight of the development team in attendance in the stands, and the three points clinched the 2026 MEC South Division Championship for the Program.
Up Next:
Up next for the Golden Eagles is a trip to Frostburg for their final Mountain East Conference regular season game this Wednesday October 28. Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm.
