Golden Eagles Complete the Comeback in Win Over Wheeling

Charleston, W.Va. – The University of Charleston never gave up the fight as the came back to defeat Wheeling University in five sets.

The Basics:
Location: Wehrle Innovation Center
Score: Charleston 3, Wheeling 2
Records:  UC (16-10, 8-4 MEC), WU (14-10, 8-4 MEC)

How It Happened:
Wheeling grabbed control of the first set quickly, starting off with a 6-0 run. Charleston battled back to make it 11-10, but another run by WU put the Cardinals ahead 20-13. Wheeling would take the first set by a score of 25-19. The Golden Eagles completely switched the narrative in the second set, getting out to an early lead and holding it steadily. A 5-0 run followed by another run of seven unanswered points was enough to get UC a second set win by a score of 25-13. Momentum flipped the opposite way in the third set in favor of Wheeling. The Cardinals went on a six-point run in the middle of the set and closed it out with a 5-0 run to take set three 25-13. Charleston had their backs against the wall in the fourth set, and they played like it. The two sides traded points back and forth until a block from Kate Strong and Jasmine Broberg sealed the set 26-24 in favor of UC. In the decisive fifth set, the Cardinals brought the heat with an early 7-1 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back, but found themselves at 14-11 set point for what would be a Wheeling win. Charleston scored five unanswered points to stun the Cardinals and take the final set 16-14.

Jasmine Broberg led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills as well as 4 service aces. Kate Strong contributed 11 kills and 8 total blocks, while Sahana Rajesh led the match with 34 digs.
