Golden Eagles Victorious Over Bears

Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston was victorious over the Bears of Shawnee State University in a four set match on Friday night.

The Basics:
Location: Wehrle Innovation Center
Score: Charleston 3, Shawnee St. 1
Records: UC (9-9, 2-3 MEC), SSU (6-11, 1-4 MEC)

How It Happened:
In set one, points were equally traded between the Bears and Golden Eagles until a late run by UC. Charleston scored four straight points, all from kills, to take a 21-16 lead. After a quick rebuttal from Shawnee, Charleston scored three successive points to take the set 25-18. The second set was a battle between the two squads. This set featured fourteen tied scores and seven lead changes. Though both teams strung together nice runs throughout the set, Shawnee would take it by a score of 25-23. The third set, like the two previous, played out in a highly competitive fashion. Both teams had multi-point runs within the set, but Charleston's 5-0 run to make the score 18-14 was the most crucial. After UC gained this lead, they did not let it slip, taking the set 25-19. Intent to end it at four sets, Charleston showed complete control over the final set. The set started with a 5-0 UC run and then soon after came seven unanswered points for the Golden Eagles. This deficit loomed too large for the Bears, as Charleston would take the set, and ultimately the match, by a score of 25-16.

Jasmine Broberg led the Golden Eagles offense with 12 digs and 3 service aces. Kate Strong and Madison Easton each collected 4 blocks. London Upchurch contributed 24 assists and Sahana Rajesh added 22 digs.
