Golden Eagles Split Day Two, Defeating Ohio Dominican at UC Invitational

Charleston, W.Va. — The University of Charleston softball team split Saturday's action at the UC Invitational, falling to Ashland University in the morning before rebounding with a win over Ohio Dominican in the afternoon.

Game 1

THE BASICS:
Location: UC Softball Field – Charleston, W.Va.
score: Ashland 4, Charleston 0
Records: Charleston 6–4 (0-0 MEC) | Ashland 3–5 (0-0 G-MAC)

How it Happened:
The opening game of the day remained scoreless through the first two innings before Ashland broke through in the top of the third. The Eagles opened the inning with a walk and a single to put runners on base before scoring the first run on an RBI bunt single. Ashland followed with an RBI groundout to bring home a second run, then added a third on a sacrifice fly to center field, taking a 3–0 lead.

Charleston looked to answer throughout the middle innings, putting runners on base and collecting four hits in the game, but was unable to capitalize. Ashland added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when a double to left field brought home a run, extending the lead to 4–0.

Charleston's defense was steady throughout the contest, committing no errors and holding Ashland to five hits, but the early third-inning damage proved to be the difference.

THE BASICS:
Location: UC Softball Field – Charleston, W.Va.
score: Charleston 4, Ohio Dominican 1
Records: Charleston 7–4 (0-0 MEC) | Ohio Dominican 3-6 (0-0 G-MAC)

How it Happened:

Charleston responded in the afternoon matchup, opening the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back singles put runners on base before a stolen base moved both into scoring position. Cali Masters then drove a two-run single up the middle to give the Golden Eagles a 2–0 advantage.

Ohio Dominican cut into the lead in the top of the fourth, using a single and an RBI base hit to make it a 2–1 game. Charleston maintained the one-run edge until the bottom of the sixth, when the Golden Eagles added two key runs. The inning began with a runner reaching base before a sacrifice fly brought home a run. Another run crossed the plate later in the frame following a throwing error, pushing the lead to 4–1.

Ohio Dominican threatened in the top of the seventh, placing runners on base, but Charleston turned a double play to end the inning and close out the win.
