Golden Eagles Break Through Late, Defeat Bloomsburg 5–1

Salem, Va. — The University of Charleston softball team secured a 5–1 victory over Bloomsburg on March 15 at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Virginia.

The Basics:

How It Happened:
Charleston opened the game with three quick outs in the first inning, while Bloomsburg picked up a single from S. Yamrick but stranded the runner to keep the game scoreless.

Both teams remained quiet through the second, third, and fourth innings. Bloomsburg threatened in the third with a single and two walks but left two runners on base as Charleston's defense held strong.

The Golden Eagles broke through in the fifth inning. D. Pici reached on an error to start the rally, followed by a single from A. Espinoza. M. Hataway added another base hit to load the bases before B. Polistina delivered a two-RBI single to give Charleston a 2–0 lead. E. Zucchero added another hit in the inning as Charleston totaled four hits and took advantage of a Bloomsburg error.

Charleston extended its lead in the sixth inning. C. Masters singled to open the frame, and after advancing, M. Entler came around to score on a fielder's choice by E. Smith to make it 3–0.

In the seventh inning, B. Polistina again sparked the offense with a single and stolen base. E. Zucchero followed with an RBI double to left field, pushing the lead to 4–0. Later in the inning, K. Moran reached on an error, allowing another run to score and extend the advantage to 5–0.

Bloomsburg got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a run on a single by T. Kranzley, but Charleston closed out the game to secure the 5–1 win.

Up Next:
Charleston remains in Salem, Va. for another matchup later on March 15, facing Shepherd University at the same site as part of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament.
