WHEELING, W.Va. — The University of Charleston's Pau Sanchez shot a 71 and 70 at the MEC Spring Classic to capture Mountain East Conference Player of the Year honors at the conclusion of Tuesday's MEC Spring Classic.
The annual spring golf event held Monday and Tuesday at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia, determined the MEC's top individual honors: Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and all-conference teams. The awards were determined by individual performances during five MEC-sponsored rounds of golf, three of which occurred during the fall at Cobb Course at the Resort at Glade Springs, combined with the two-day event at Oglebay Resort.
Sanchez, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, had a five-round average of 70.8 following Tuesday's second round. Sanchez shot a 70 on Tuesday, as he held on to win Player of the Year honors while Glenville State's Fermin Perez Santandrea won the MEC Spring Classic as he shot a 137 over the two days.
Point Park's Milo Thim, who is from Kungsbacka, Sweden, won the MEC Freshman of the Year with a five-round average of 72.2. He shot a 76 on Monday followed by a 70 on day two.
UC head coach Will Johnson was named the MEC Men's Golf Coach of the Year.
Joining Sanchez and Thim on the first were Glenville State's Fermin Perez Santandrea and Daiki Aiura, Wheeling's Zack Collins, and Fairmont State's Caleb Young.
The MEC recognizes six first-teamers, six second-teamers, and six for honorable mention. A two-way tie increased the number of All-MEC second team selections to seven this season, and six received honorable mention recognition, with two honorable mention selections coming by a majority of votes by the coaches.
