Charleston Closes Regular Season with Doubleheader Sweep Over Frostburg State

Frostburg, Md. — The University of Charleston softball team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep over Frostburg State on May 3 at Bobcat Field. The Golden Eagles took game one 13-5 before rallying for an 8-6 win in game two.

Game 1

The Basics:
Location: Bobcat Field | Frostburg, Md.
Score: Charleston 13, Frostburg State 5
Records: Charleston (40-14, 24-6 MEC), Frostburg State (34-12, 17-11 MEC)

How It Happened:
Charleston got off to a fast start in the first inning as Kayla Moran launched a three-run home run to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.

The momentum carried into the second inning when Taylor Hodson drove in a run with a double before Moran added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-0.

Charleston continued to build in the third inning. Aubriana Espinoza delivered an RBI single before Maya Hataway followed with a two-RBI single to push the advantage to 9-0.

Frostburg State responded in the fifth inning with five runs, cutting the lead to 9-5 after a two-run home run from Laura Gilford and a two-RBI single from Sage Haller.

The Golden Eagles answered immediately in the sixth. Danielle Pici drove in a run with a single before Emma Smith added another RBI to make it 11-5.

Charleston added two more in the seventh inning as Hodson came through with a two-RBI single, securing the 13-5 victory. 
 
Game 2

The Basics:
Location: Bobcat Field | Frostburg, Md.
Score: Charleston 8, Frostburg State 6
Records: Charleston (41-14, 24-6 MEC), Frostburg State (34-13, 17-11 MEC)

How It Happened:
Charleston struck first in the opening inning as Danielle Pici drove in a run with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
Frostburg State answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to move ahead 3-1.

The Golden Eagles responded in the third inning when Pici delivered a two-RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.

Frostburg regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, but Charleston battled back again in the fifth. Kayla Moran scored on an error before Emma Smith added an RBI single to give Charleston a 5-4 lead.
Frostburg tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run.

Charleston took control in the sixth inning. Hodson drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single before Smith delivered a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 8-5.

Frostburg added one more in the sixth, but Cali Masters closed the game in the seventh to secure the 8-6 win and complete the sweep.
