Charleston, W.Va. – The University of Charleston women's soccer team opened the 2026 season at home on Sunday, battling Kutztown University in a hard-fought matchup at the Welch Athletic Complex. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead but ultimately fell 3-1 to the Golden Bears.

How It Happened
Charleston came out strong, immediately putting pressure on the Kutztown defense. Just three minutes into the match, a cross from Sidney Crowe found Li-Lou Debaecker, whose initial shot was saved by the Kutztown goalkeeper. Debaecker stayed with the play and finished the rebound to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 advantage. Kutztown responded quickly, forcing Charleston goalkeeper Ines Degli Esposti to make two saves over the next five minutes. The Golden Bears continued to apply pressure, hitting the post before finding the crossbar within the opening 20 minutes. Charleston created another opportunity in the 26th minute when newcomer Abigail Harrison forced a save from the Kutztown goalkeeper. The two teams continued to battle throughout the remainder of the half, but Kutztown found the equalizer just 30 seconds before halftime to send the match into the break tied at 1-1.
The Golden Bears carried their momentum into the second half, registering two shots in the opening five minutes before taking the lead in the 51st minute. Kutztown continued to control the pressure for much of the next 20 minutes but could not extend its advantage. Charleston began to regain control after making several substitutions, creating multiple chances in the attacking third. Sydney Crowe came close to finding the equalizer, forcing a quality save from the Kutztown goalkeeper on one of her two second-half attempts. With Charleston pushing for a late equalizer, Kutztown put the match out of reach in the 88th minute, securing a 3-1 victory.
