Charleston Finishes Tournament with Two Strong Wins

Canton, OH - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles bounced back on the second day of the Malone University Volleyball Hall of Fame City Challenge on Saturday with two hard fought wins.

The Basics:

Game 1 Score: Charleston 3, Roosevelt 0
Game 2 Score: Charleston 3, Edinboro University of PA 2

Game 1:

Charleston dominated in a three-set sweep over Roosevelt on Saturday morning. In the first set, UC took a 3-0 lead and never looked back. That three-point run was just one of five that Charleston had in the first set. Set two started with a three-point swing in favor of Roosevelt, leading to a back-and forth competitive set. Charleston ultimately pulled away following a five-point run that brought the score to 22-16. The Golden Eagles trailed in the third set 11-15 until a kill from Sophie Bailey started a 7-0 run, ultimately leading to the sweep. 

Patrycja Majos led the Golden Eagles offense with 9 kills with a .353 hitting percentage while London Upchurch contributed 19 assists. Jada Thomas-Swinson led the defensive effort with 4 blocks.

Game 2:

The Golden Eagles persevered through a hard-fought battle with Edinboro. After dropping the first set 26-24, Charleston responded in set two with a 25-22 victory. UC closed out the second set with a 9-1 run, ending with a kill from Divine Muo. The third set was competitive but ended in a 25-21 win for the Fighting Scots. With their backs against the wall, UC pulled out a win in the fourth set behind a 6-0 run soon followed by a 5-0 run to send the match to a decisive fifth set. Charleston left no room for doubt, starting the final set on a 7-0 run and winning 15-8. 

Divine Muo recorded a match-high 16 kills with a .368 hit percentage for Charleston as well as 8 blocks. Kate Strong led the match with 13 total blocks. London Upchurch recorded 24 assists for the Golden Eagles and Bianca Bower added 26 digs on the defensive end.

Up Next:
The Golden Eagles will return to Charleston to host the UC/WVSU Crossover Tournament. Games start on Friday, September 4th, when UC will take on Shepherd University and Young Harris College.
