CALIFORNIA, Pa. — The University of Charleston football team found itself in another high-scoring battle Thursday night, but a fast start by California (Pa.) proved too much to overcome as the Golden Eagles fell to the Vulcans, 49-24, at Adamson Stadium.

How it Happened:
Charleston, which dropped to 0-2 on the season, matched Cal's offensive production for stretches of the opening half, but the Vulcans built a 42-24 advantage before halftime and kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard throughout the second half. The game was delayed by severe weather for more than three hours, stretching the contest well into the early morning hours.
Charleston quarterback Matt Frye turned in a strong statistical performance despite the loss, completing 18 of 35 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown. He connected frequently with Devin Hobbs, who finished with 173 receiving yards and Charleston's lone touchdown reception. The Golden Eagles also received a productive night from the ground game, with Jamal Wallace rushing for 71 yards as Charleston finished with 104 net rushing yards.
Charleston opened the scoring on the opening drive of the game when Zachary Alvarez drilled a 23-yard field goal to cap a 74-yard drive and give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.
After the first weather delay, Cal answered quickly, scoring on its next possession to take a 7-3 advantage. The Vulcans continued to find the end zone and eventually built a 21-10 lead after the opening quarter. The Golden Eagles continued to move the football and Frye eventually found Hobbs for a 16-yard touchdown with 37 seconds remaining in the first half. Alvarez's extra point brought Charleston within 42-24 heading into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles generated 387 yards of total offense, actually outgaining the Vulcans' 363 yards. Charleston finished with 283 passing yards and 104 rushing yards, while Cal totaled 213 yards through the air and 150 on the ground. The difference came largely in efficiency and finishing drives. Cal quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. threw four touchdown passes and added a rushing score, while the Vulcans converted four of six trips inside the red zone into touchdowns. Charleston's defense settled down after halftime, holding Cal scoreless for much of the second half before the Vulcans added one final touchdown with 12:43 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Despite the setback, Charleston showed signs of an offense capable of producing big plays. The Golden Eagles recorded 20 first downs and averaged 5.8 yards per play while Frye's 283 passing yards represented a significant increase from Charleston's season opener against Grand Valley State.
