Judson Hunter is entering his second season at the University of Charleston as the Running Backs and Tight Ends Coach after beginning his coaching career with the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders of Conference-USA. During his time at Middle Tennessee, Hunter assisted with the Wide Receivers and worked as a Recruiting analyst, while also working with the Special Teams. Beyond his duties as Running Backs and Tight Ends coach, Hunter is also the Kickoff unit and Video Coordinator for the program.
Last season, Hunter helped the University of Charleston achieve the 9th best rushing attack in the nation in the program’s greatest overall season to date, winning its first ever Mountain East Conference Championship and first ever playoff victory. The offense ranked in the top ten in several major offensive categories, including 4th in the nation in scoring (44.0 ppg). Both Charleston’s starting Running Back Chavon Wright and starting Tight End both received 1stteam All-MEC awards, with Chavon Wright also being named the MEC Offensive Player of the Year. Running Back Alex Brink also received All-MEC Honorable Mention and led the nation in yards per carry.
In 2022, Hunter was a part of Middle Tennessee’s first program victory against an AP Top-25 team, beating #24 Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. Along with playing a role working with the Wide Receivers, Hunter also assisted with the Special Teams. Middle Tennessee finished the 2022 season with one of the top Special Teams units in the country. Middle Tennessee finished #5 in the nation for Special Teams Efficiency for 2022, according to ESPN FPI. Middle Tennessee saw their starting Punter and Long-Snapper be named 1st Team All-Conference and their primary Punt Returner receive 2nd Team All-Conference Honors. Middle Tennessee boasted a C-USA Special Teams Player of the Year Finalist in Ralph Mency. Also, MTSU boasted the CFN 2022 All-American Special Teams Player in Yusuf Ali. Their Special Teams unit tied for 2nd in the country in blocked kicks recording 6 in 2022 & tied for 3rd in the country in blocked punts with 4, as well as being 12th in the country in Net Punting (41.88). Overall, the program finished in the Top 50 in Punt Return, Combined Kick Returns, and Field Goal %.
After being named Player of the Year his senior season at East Coweta High School in Sharpsburg, Georgia, Hunter would continue his playing career at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, under Head Coach Geno Demarco, where he started several games at cornerback as a true freshman. Hunter would begin his coaching career as the offensive and defensive pass-game coordinator at Houston County High School (TN) where the program went from 1-9 and 0-10 records in their previous seasons to earning their first playoff appearance since 2003 and first playoff victory since 1989, finishing the season 7-4. Hunter than would be named the Head Coach of a prominent Nashville-based Semipro team that won the MTFL Championship in their inaugural season.
Hunter stepped away from football to serve in the United States Marine Corps where he served as an Infantry Assaultman and Squad Leader with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, and 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, spending time overseas and finishing his service in 2021.
