Brett Rector returns to the University of Charleston Men’s Basketball Program for the 2020-21 season. Rector had previously served as the top assistant at UC from 2014-18.
Rector spent the 2019-20 season serving as the head coach at Parkersburg South High School. Rector led the Patriots to a 16-8 overall record while also capturing the Sectional and Regional Championships. Parkersburg South earned a berth in the West Virginia AAA Boys Basketball State Tournament.
Prior to his time at Parkersburg South, Rector spent four seasons with the Golden Eagles from 2014-18 under Head Coach Dwaine Osborne. While serving as Osborne’s top assistant, the Golden Eagles boasted 68 wins and made a trip to the MEC Tournament Championship game in 2018.
Before his first stint with the Golden Eagles, Rector spent a season at his high school alma mater, Ravenswood High School, and was also a women’s assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University.
From 2010-12, Rector was at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky. Rector helped Pikeville to a school record 30 wins on its way to winning the NAIA D1 National Championship in 2011. UPike beat five of the top nine seeds in the national tournament. The Bears finished the season among the top seven in 10 statistical categories, including leading the nation in steals, three-point field goals made, and scoring. He recruited and coached three NAIA All-Americans in two seasons. After spending his first season at UPike as an assistant coach, Rector was promoted to associate head coach.
Before arriving in Pikeville, Rector spent two seasons as an assistant at West Virginia Tech. In 2008-09 he helped the team to its first 20-win season in 19 years, including a win over No. 1 ranked Mountain State. Rector played at Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia. He scored 1,249 career points and hit 300 three-pointers during his career. He was selected All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2007 and 2008. Rector led the nation in NCAA Division II in three-pointers per game in 2006-07 and was second in the nation in NCAA Division II in 2007-08.
The Ravenswood, W.Va. native earned first team all-state honors in football and basketball at Ravenswood High School in 2003. He holds 17 school passing records including 4,500 yards and 47 touchdowns. He scored 1,250 career points and led West Virginia in three-pointers made in 2001 and 2003. Rector earned a bachelor’s degree in history at Davis & Elkins in 2008 and a master’s in sport management from West Virginia University in 2009. He is married to his wife Cassie and they have one child, Bryce (2).
