The 2023-24 season will mark the fourth season overall in which Bent will be an assistant and the third in which he will serve as recruiting coordinator for Dwaine Osborne and the University of Charleston men’s basketball program.
The 2022-23 season with Bent on the bench produced another highly efficient season on offense, with the team finishing top 7 in the nation in field goal percentage in an 19-10 season that included a 10-game win streak. Two of Bent’s biggest job responsibilities collided for the good of the team during this past season. Where he saw a player he recruited in 2018-19 (Keith Williams), and then proceeded to oversee his skill development end his career tied for the most wins in program history (102 wins) and another first team all-conference selection.
After returning to the program in the 2021-22 season, Bent helped to guide the program to a 24-7 finish while going 17-5 in conference play and making an appearance in the MEC tournament championship game. It was a great offensive season for the program as they finished near the top of the country in many metrics including leading the country in points per possession, percentage of time scored, and field goal percentage in after time out situations. The program also would finish second in the country in overall field goal percentage (51.9%).
Max Bent returns to the University of Charleston in 2021-22 for his second stint with head coach Dwaine Osborne. Previously, Bent spent the 2018-19 season with the Golden Eagles.
Bent returns to the University of Charleston after two seasons at the University of Denver. As the Director of Basketball Operations, Bent handled all logistics of travel, scheduling, meals and lodging of the team on the road. He also was responsible for handling all film and video editing and scheduling practice times and plans throughout the year for both home and away contests. Prior to Denver, Bent served as an assistant coach at the University of Charleston in 2018-19. In his lone year with the program, Bent helped propel the Golden Eagles to only its second 20-win regular season in the last 17 years. As a team Charleston finished second in the country in field goal percentage with a mark of 52.1% from the field and scored an average of 86.6 points per game which was good enough to finish the season as the 18th highest scoring offense in the country. Bent’s responsibilities included perimeter player development, scouting of upcoming opponents, recruiting, being the point person for social outreach, running the program’s social media accounts, compliance, and academics. Prior to his time at the University of Charleston, Bent served as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Detroit Mercy for the 2017-18 season under then head coach Bacari Alexander. While with the program he had a multitude of responsibilities. These duties
included scouting upcoming opponents through film and disseminating that information to the coaching staff, creating style of play videos, helping to plan and carry out summer camps, and leading crowdfunding campaigns. He was also an instrumental part to helping develop the program’s student manager program. Bent attended the University of Michigan from 2013 to 2017 where he served as a student manager on John Beilein’s staff for four years and was named the head student manager for his senior year. He performed tasks with the Director of Basketball Operations, Director of Player Personnel, Video Analyst, and Graduate Manager. He also was an integral part to the development of the student manager program in the interviewing and hiring process in the 2016-17 season. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management in 2017. Bent is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan where he graduated from Comstock Park High School.
