University of Charleston Athletics

Originally from Rhode Island, Willem Hawthorne joins the Golden Eagles in his first season as Assistant Coach. 

Willem began his coaching career in 2024 as the head coach of the Boys Varsity team at Annandale High School in Annandale, Virginia where he also taught US History. At AHS, Willem was the first head coach of the boys volleyball program and led the Atoms to a runner-up finish in the National District in their inaugural season. Willem also coached club at The St. James with both 16s and 18s. 

As a player, Willem was a Middle Blocker at James Madison University, playing all four years. He served on the executive board and was part of multiple NCVF top 15 teams. He most recently played for the NOVA Knights in the VLA.  

Throughout his time at JMU, Willem also refereed at the NCAA Division I, Division III, and high school levels. He graduated in 2024 with his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with minors in Secondary Education and Social Studies. 

Willem will also be pursuing his Master of Business in Management here at Charleston.
