AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Regional baseball power Slippery Rock pounded out 16 hits as they held off a late charge by the University of Charleston baseball team for a 10-7 win, Tuesday afternoon.
SRU rode a quick 5-1 lead through the second inning as the top six batters in the Rock lineup each recorded two hits. The Golden Eagles got back into the contest with a three run third inning to only trail by a score of 5-4. The teams would trade runs for two innings before Slippery Rock managed to shut out UC in the sixth, while plating a run of their own to open the SRU advantage to 8-6.
The Golden Eagles pulled within a run (8-7) in the eighth inning, yet it was short lived as the Rock tagged Golden Eagle reliever Matt Maus for two runs in the bottom half of the inning to seal the final score.
The teams combined for an astounding seven errors in the contest and 25 total hits. The University of Charleston trios of pitchers made the SRU hitters earn their passes as they only surrendered three walks for the entire contest, yet UC batters combined to strike out 11 times on the day.
Andrew Stichter led the Golden Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 afternoon, while also scoring two runs.
