Softball Drops Two on First Day of Salem Tournament

Box Score - Game 1

Box Score - Game 2

SALEM, Va. –
East Stroudsburg and California (Pa.) each narrowly eclipsed the University of Charleston softball team during morning action of the Salem Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va., Saturday morning. ESU slipped past UC 4-3 in the first contest, while pitching dominated as Cal captured a 1-0 win to cap the morning.

The Warriors led game one off with a quick 1-0 advantage thanks to a first inning homerun, but the Golden Eagles responded in the third inning with a single run of their own to knot the game at 1-1. Samantha Macias (Safford, Ariz./Safford) handed the University of Charleston its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a deep two-run homerun for a 3-1 lead.

The two-run advantage would not last long as ESU displayed it power at the plate with back-to-back homeruns in the top of the seventh to score three runs and knock UC starter Stefanie Rossman (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) from the mound, while also sealing a 4-3 win.

The second contest didn’t develop the offensive firepower of the first as Rossman pitched a gem in allowing just three hits the entire game, yet two of those hits came in the bottom of the sixth as California (Pa.) plated the only run of the contest for the 1-0 win.

The Golden Eagles are back in action tonight against another Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent in Shippensburg at 8:30 pm for another contest at the Moyer Sports Complex.
