CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston baseball team dropped both games of a WVIAC divisional doubleheader to Kanawha Valley rival WV State, Saturday afternoon. Seven errors on the day created an uphill battle for the Golden Eagles against the No. 19 ranked Yellow Jackets.
WVSU leadoff hitter Josh Bower set the tempo for the afternoon by leading off the first contest with a homerun deep to left field. The Golden Eagles fell behind 6-0 as they could not find any offensive groove against WV State starter Ryne Holstine. Sophomore Andy Stichter (Inglis, Fla./Dunnellon) provided the only highlight of the first contest with a sixth inning homerun to cut the WVSU lead to 6-1. WV State added a single run in the seventh inning to secure the 7-1 victory.
The second contest saw the Yellow Jackets grab 4-0 lead capitalizing on four UC errors. The Golden Eagles also got in on the action by taking advantage of a two-out WV State error to plate a run in the third inning to pull the score to 4-1. Both teams added a single run in the fourth inning, but that would be the end of the scoring for UC as WVSU added an insurance run in the sixth to set the score at 6-2.
Junior
Andrew Armstrong (Washington, Pa./Trinity) paced UC at the plate in game two with a 3-for-4 effort, while also scoring a run.
The teams will faceoff again on Sunday, March 28 on the WV State campus begining at 1:00 pm.
