CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Senior Mike Dahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee Senior) led the way with a 4-for-5 evening as the University of Charleston baseball team pounded out 15 hits in an 11-5 victory over visiting Washington Adventist, Saturday evening at Appalachian Power Park.
The Golden Eagles (13-17) grabbed the early 5-2 lead as starting pitcher Anthony Pagano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Christian) held the Pioneer offense at bay until the seventh inning. In the seventh, WAU took advantage of a Charleston miscue and used timely hitting to plate three-runs and tie the contest at 5-5.
Reliever Alex Oldham (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) came on in the seventh to retire the final two outs and quiet the Washington Adventist comeback. Charleston’s offense picked up the pace during its half of the seventh as Jim Clarke (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) hammered an RBI double to score freshman designated hitter Igor Molina (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) who had walked earlier in the inning. Clarke would late score himself on a hard-hit single by Dahl to retake a two-run lead at 7-5.
Oldham eliminated the Pioneer batters in order in the top of the eighth and handed the field back over to the UC offense who would not disappoint. The Golden Eagles would tally six hits in the eighth, while scoring four runs to secure the final score of 11-5 and allow Oldham to retire the side in order again in the top of the ninth to earn his first victory of the season.
Earlier in the day Charleston dropped a nine-inning slugfest to Lake Erie 19-13. Four UC pitchers would combine to allow 18 hits, while allowing just 13 earned runs of the 18 scored by the Storm. Andrew Armstrong (Washington, Pa./Trinity) would highlight the contest with three-RBIs and a 2-for-5 performance that would include his first homerun of the season.
The Golden Eagles return to the diamond Sunday, April 11, 2010 for a doubleheader against Washington Adventist at 1:00 pm to be played at Appalachian Power Park.
