BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston baseball team dropped its ninth-straight contest as WV Wesleyan swept a doubleheader 5-2 & 12-9, Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles held a 2-0 advantage for much of the first contest behind the hot-hand of freshman pitcher
Travis Zimmerman (White Sulfer Springs, W.Va./Greenbrier East). The Bobcats showed they were a 20+ win team by not turning in the contest and the bats came alive against Zimmerman.
WV Wesleyan capitalized on back-to-back Charleston errors and three-hits to score three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Zimmerman and reliever
Matt Maus (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin) were tagged for four hits and a walk in the bottom of the sixth as Wesleyan scored a security run to seal the final margin at 5-2.
In the second contest of the day, UC jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead after three innings of play as the Golden Eagles rallied nine-hits together. Charleston managed just four hits the entire first contest.
The Bobcats cut into the Golden Eagle lead with three-unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the UC lead 7-4. WV Wesleyan used a grand-slam and three-RBI double in the fifth to take control of the contest as they scored eight runs for a 12-7 lead.
Charleston would add two-runs in the sixth behind RBI singles by
Mike Dahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee Senior) and
John Schraer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson), but it would not be enough to overcome the big Wesleyan comeback as the final out set the score at 12-9.
Charleston wraps up its season on Saturday, April 24th with a 1:00 pm doubleheader against Kanawha Valley rival WV State.
