CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston baseball pulled out a doubleheader upset of Kanawha Valley rival and No. 24 ranked West Virginia State by scores of 8-2 and 12-1, Friday afternoon.
Junior Mike Morency (Parkland, Fla./Coral Springs Christian) earned his first win of the season by scattering five hits in a complete game effort. The Yellow Jackets were only able to plate two runs against Morency with a two-run homerun in the third inning, but he would compose himself on the mound and allow just one hit over the next four innings.
Charleston took control of the game in the top of the fourth by plating four runs on WV State ace Ryne Holstine capped by a two-RBI single by Ryan Hathaway (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown). UC kept the offensive pressure on with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning as they pulled away before securing the 8-2 win with two security runs in the top of the seventh.
Leading hitter Ross Easterling (Logan, W.Va./Logan) continued to stay hot with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate in the first game including a two-RBI double in the sixth inning.
The second contest saw another Golden Eagle pitching gem as junior Anthony Pagano (Plantation, Fla./Coral Springs Christian) shut down the potent WV State offense allowing just six hits and one run in a complete game effort.
Charleston quickly pulled away in the second game with an early 5-1 lead as the UC offense nailed four doubles and Hathaway blasted his first homerun of the season in the first three innings.
The Yellow Jackets suffered the major blow of the contest in the fourth inning as three West Virginia State pitchers were knocked around for six runs as Charleston controlled the game with the 11-1 lead. In the inning, sophomore Andy Stichter (Inglis, Fla./Dunnellon) nailed a bases loaded two-RBI single to leftfield and freshman Igor Molina (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) recorded his seventh homerun of the season to plate three-runs.
UC added its final insurance run in the fifth inning as Nick Barnes (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) ended the scoring at 12-1 with an RBI single to leftfield.
The Golden Eagles finish the 2010 season with an 18-26 overall record with a 6-10 WVIAC Southern Division record.
