CHARLESTON, W.Va. – For the second day in a row the University of Charleston baseball team used seventh inning heroics to pull out a WVIAC win over Ohio Valley as they took the first game of a Saturday doubleheader 8-7 at Triana Field. The Fighting Scots rebounded in the second game for a 13-6 win to keep UC from sweeping the four-game series.
Leading hitter Ross Easterling (Logan, W.Va./Logan) started the scoring in the first contest with an RBI single in the second inning, before scoring himself on an OVU fielding error for the 2-0 lead early. The Fighting Scots recaptured the lead with three-unearned runs in the third inning off Charleston starter Matt Thompson (Ashland, Ky./Fairview).
OVU would tag Thompson for three additional runs with one in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to take a 6-2 advantage. Thompson would register a no decision for the contest as he allowed nine hits in 5.0 innings of action with six runs scored, yet only three runs were earned.
UC’s bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning as the comeback started with an Andy Stichter (Inglis, Fla./Dunnellon) RBI single to leftfield, which scored Nick Barnes (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) who had doubled earlier in the inning. Yesterday's hero Igor Molina (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) continued the scoring in the fifth with a two-RBI triple to center making the score 6-5. Senior Jim Clarke (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) delivered the decisive blow by closing the fifth inning with a two-run homerun to plate Molina for the 7-6 lead.
Ohio Valley put a single run on the board in the top of the seventh off Charleston reliever Garrett Bostic (White Sulfer Springs, W.Va./Greenbrier East) to tie the game at seven runs each. The Golden Eagles came out strong in the bottom of the seventh for the second-straight game as Molina lead-off the inning with a single up the middle. Just as it went it yesterdays contest the next batter (Clarke) moved the runner to scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Mike Dahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee Senior) delivered the closing blow with a game-ending double to score Molina and secure the 8-7 victory.
Clarke led UC at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored and two RBI, while also setting up the winning run. Stichter followed close behind with a three-hit effort on the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles were not able to take the weekend sweep as they committed five errors and surrendered 13 hits in a 13-6 loss. Sophomore Ryan Hathaway (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led UC in the second contest by going 2-of-3 with a run scored and RBI.
The team returns to action for a non-conference doubleheader against Bluefield State on Monday, April 5 at 1:00 pm.
