WHEELING, W.Va. – The No. 6 ranked University of Charleston men’s soccer team opened conference play with a 1-0 victory over Wheeling Jesuit, Saturday afternoon in Wheeling, W.Va.
The Golden Eagles (3-0-1) dominated the attack for much of the match as they outshot the Cardinals (2-2-0) 21-6 in the contest. Despite the constant pressure from the Charleston offense WJU goalkeeper Shane Young kept his team even with the conference favorite with nine saves, seven in the first half alone.
UC’s continuous attack finally found the back of the net in the 66th minute as junior Harry Machacha (Germiston, South Africa/Tyler JC) drove home an unassisted goal for lone points of the contest.
Sophomore All-American Rob Vincent (Liverpool, England/Prescot) led the Golden Eagles with six shots on the afternoon, while freshman Chase Robertson (Midlothian, Tex./Midlothian) and Machacha followed close behind with four shots apiece.
