VIENNA, W.Va. - A pesky presence at the net for the University of Charleston volleyball team limited host Ohio Valley to under a 10 percent hitting percentage all night as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 3-0 win, Friday night.
Ten UC hitters marked the box score with kills as the Charleston attack took a game to gets it feet under it in the WVIAC matchup with OVU. Despite commiting 11 errors in 50 attempts in the opening set the Golden Eagles managed 14 kills, while the continual pressure on the Fighting Scot hitters forced the home team into seven errors to let the first game slip away 25-21.
After a rough first set Charleston found its stroke to runaway with the next two games 25-16 behind a strong night by Cara Hibbs-Leyva who powered home 13 kills for a team-high hitting percentage of .347. Four players finished behind Hibbs-Leyva with five kills, while libero Ashley Douglas paced the Golden Eagles defensively with 17 digs.
Senior Katie Williams continued to provide a strong setup for the Charleston offense with 22 assists, while Kelsey Eby contributed 12 assists and nine digs.
The victory is the ninth of the season for the Golden Eagles and head coach Bren Stevens' 499 career win. UC will go after Coach Stevens 500th career win on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6:00 pm against WVIAC contender Alderson-Broaddus in the friendly confines of Eddie King Gym.
