Golden Eagles Shut Out Senators

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- University of Charleston opponents have had a hard time trying to slow down the Golden Eagles all season, especially having the last two West Virginia Conference Player of the Year's on their team.

UC standouts Dion Peters and Rob Vincent have won the prestigious award the last two seasons and are likely to be battling it out for the honor again this season.

While both juniors have had outstanding years again this season, UC has proven they are much more than just the two-standout playmakers.

Davis & Elkins was the most recent team to find out that fact.

The Golden Eagles got a pair of goals from some unlikely sources, showing off their tremendous depth in knocking off the Senators 3-0 at Schoenbaum Stadium inside Coonskin Park in the semifinals of the WVC Tournament on Thursday night.

With the victory, UC (12-6-0), the No. 1 seed in the league and No. 3 in the Atlantic Region, advances to the WVC championship, where it will face Wheeling Jesuit at 6 p.m. Saturday at Schoenbaum Stadium.
UC will be looking to earn its third consecutive title.

"It would be fitting for this team that has already won it twice in a row, to win in back-to-back-to back" UC first-year Coach Chris Grassie said. "It would be fantastic. I've been saying all season that we are the best team."

Adam Hintz netted the first goal of the game with 18:45 left in the first half. It was just Hintz's second goal of the season. Later in the half, Ryan Osborne also scored for UC with 1:50 remaining, and it was just the junior's third goal of the year.

"It was very good (to see Hintz's goal)," Chris Grassie said. "We kind of preach total soccer. He started out playing right back and ends up playing left forward. He can play, can run and can pass. Hintz getting in the box and scoring was great."

"It was real nice to score," Hintz said. "The ball just came right in front of me and I just had to do what I had to do. I put it in the back of the net. It felt real good to score that first goal. It set the tone."
