WHEELING, W.Va. – The University of Charleston softball team pounded 17 hits in support of strikeout sensation Stefanie Rossman who had 14 total strikeouts in a doubleheader sweep of conference opponent Wheeling Jesuit.
Rossman, who entered the weekend ranked No. 6 in NCAA DII in strikeouts, collected seven K’s in the first contest as the Golden Eagles took advantage of six Cardinal errors to runaway with a dominant 9-0 victory.
At the plate in the first game, leading hitter Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA/Loudoun Valley) and Sydney Finley (Alpharetta, GA/Chatahoochee) paced Charleston with perfect 3-for-3 performances. Tretick also led all batters with three RBIs and two runs scored in the win.
The tides turned in the second contest of the day as WJU was able to make UC pay for a costly fielding error in the first inning to plate a run to take a quick 1-0 advantage.
The 1-0 lead would hold up for Wheeling Jesuit until the fourth inning when Tretick led the inning off with a double down the leftfield line and eventually knot the game at 1-1 on a Sierra Curley (Moreno Valley,CA/Canyon Springs) sacrifice fly.
The tie did not take long to be broken as for the second time in the game a costly fielding error doomed UC this time allowing the Cardinals to plate two runs for 3-1 advantage. Just when it seemed that Charleston would be its own enemy in the game the Golden Eagle bats woke up to sting two WJU pitchers for six hits in the final two innings, while also using two fielding errors to assist in scoring four late runs to take control of the game.
WJU would add a late run in the seventh inning to set the final score at 5-4 as Rossman would secure the final out of the game with the tying run on second base.
Tretick highlighted the UC comeback with what would become the game winning RBIs on a two-out, two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning to stay a perfect 6-for-6 on the day. In all the trip to Wheeling accumulated six hits, five RBIs and four runs scored for the Golden Eagles leading slugger.
