VIENNA, W.Va. – Stefanie Rossman (Concord, OH / Riverside) added 17 strikeouts to her conference leading total as the University of Charleston softball team booked a doubleheader sweep of West Virginia Conference opponent Ohio Valley, Monday evening.
Rossman tossed a complete game shut-out in the opening contest as she recorded nine strikeouts, while allowing just seven hits. The Golden Eagles offense provided all the offense it needed early as Amber Jarvis (Girard, OH / Mathews) delivered a two-out RBI single to plate Samantha Herndon (Berryville, VA / Clarke Co.) in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
UC grabbed two insurance runs in the third as Sierra Curley (Moreno Valley,CA / Canyon Springs) delivered yet another clutch hit with a two-RBI double handing Rossman a 3-0 advantage she would not relinquish.
Herndon led all Charleston hitters in the game with a 2-for-3 performance, while scoring a run.
In the second game, Ohio Valley struck for an unearned run against Rossman in the top of the first for a quick 1-0 lead.
For much of the game it looked as though the Golden Eagles would be their own enemy committing five fielding errors despite a strong performance from Rossman on the mound. OVU held the 1-0 advantage until the sixth inning when Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV / Winfield) recorded her only hit of the evening. Despite a 1-for-7 effort at the plate the final swing of the day for Wallace proved to be the most important as she delivered a two-out two-run homerun handing UC a 2-1 lead.
Rossman again notched the win after the Wallace heroics to finish her second complete game of the day.
The University of Charleston now has a few days to prepare for an April 22 matchup against WVIAC leading and Top-25 ranked WV Wesleyan, which is set for a 2:00 pm first pitch.
