Box Score
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Tim Ponn (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) put the University of Charleston baseball team in a position to snap its current losing skid, yet a true pitchers dual with one of the top pitchers in the WVIAC allowed Davis & Elkins to slip out with a 2-1 win.
Ponn went head-to-head with Zach McElroy who entered the afternoon with a league leading five wins and a 0.55 ERA. Neither pitcher budged until the fifth inning when Davis & Elkins (18-7) struck for two-runs on a fly ball that found its way just inside fair territory down the right field line for a 2-0 advantage.
Charleston (5-19) responded in its half of the fifth inning with two runners in scoring position when Andy Stichter (Inglis, Fla./Dunnellon) managed an infield single but an off-target throw allowed
Ross Easterling (Logan, W.Va./Logan) to cross the plate for UC. The single unearned run would be all the Golden Eagles could manage against McElroy.
Both pitchers battled for the duration of the game as Ponn allowed just two runs, one earned, on eight hits aand six strikeouts. McElroy's numbers for the day were similar at one run on six hits and five strikeouts.
At the plate, juniors
Nick Barnes (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) and Stichter led the way for Charleston as each ended the afternoon 2-for-4.
The teams return to the diamond for a 1:00 pm doubleheader on Sunday, April 3 at Triana Field.
