ATHENS, W.Va. – The University of Charleston softball team sealed a No. 6 seed in the West Virginia Conference tournament by splitting its conference doubleheader finale against Concord. The Golden Eagles took game one 4-3 in eight innings, before dropping the nightcap 8-4.
Both teams got the first game started with a bang as they each scored two runs in the first inning, before either pitcher had an opportunity to settle in. Concord (20-22, 7-13) was the first to break the tie with a Ericka Davie RBI single in the fourth inning for a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning Charleston (23-21, 11-8) knotted the game for a second time when Amber Jarvis (Girard, OH/Mathews) crossed the plate on a Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) fielder’s choice. Jarvis reached base to lead off the inning with a double down the leftfield line.
Golden Eagle pitching star Stefanie Rossman (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) retired the Mountain Lions in order in the sixth and seventh inning to send the game into extra innings tied at 3-3. UC wasted no time in breaking the scoring silence as Sierra Curley (Moreno Valley,CA/Canyon Springs) delivered a patented clutch hit to plate Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA/Loudoun Valley) for the 4-3 advantage.
Rossman allowed the leadoff batter to reach for CU in the bottom of the eighth, but would strand the tying run at third base by striking out the final two batters to seal the win, her 21st of the season.
Concord took advantage of five Golden Eagle errors in game two to set UC back 8-4.
The Mountain Lions grabbed the early 5-1 advantage in the third inning behind four unearned runs, while adding single runs over the next three innings. Charleston’s bats would wake up late to add three runs over the final two innings, but it would not be enough to make a comeback.
The split lands Charleston the No. 6 seed in the WVIAC tournament to setup another faceoff against Concord. UC and the Mountain Lions will square off again on Thursday, April 28 at 10 am at the Vienna Softball Complex.
