Softball Continues to Soar in WVIAC Tournament

VIENNA, W.Va. - Stefanie Rossman continues to hurl the University of Charleston thru the WVIAC Tournament as they are working towards Saturday's championship round.

Charleston 1, Seton Hill 0 (SHU eliminated)

Box Score

VIENNA, W. Va.
– Charleston rebounded from an extra-inning loss to West Virginia State to eliminate Seton Hill Friday morning by a 1-0 score.

Sydney Finley walked and stole second base. She then scampered home after two wild pitches for the game’s only run, coming in the sixth frame.

Finley and Ashlea Wallace had UC’s only two hits of the game. Stefanie Rossman posted a complete-game shutout. She struck out 10 and scattered five hits in the win.

SHU had five players earn a hit in the game. Caitlyn Kamalich tossed three innings of work as did Lyndsey Nusser.

Charleston 3, Ohio Valley 2 (OVU eliminated)

Box Score

VIENNA, W. Va.
– Charleston used a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to eliminate Ohio Valley by a 3-2 score Friday afternoon.

UC opened the game with a two-run homer by rookie Sierra Curley. Hurler Stefanie Rossman continued her solid pitching in the circle, shutting out OVU through six innings.

Brittany Shepley broke up the shutout in the seventh with a two-RBI single up the middle, knotting the score.

After Rossman got out of the jam, the Golden Eagles responded with the game-winning run off the bat of Logan Tretick.

Charleston 4, Fairmont State 3 (FSU Eliminated )

VIENNA, W.Va. - Clutch hitting helped to pull Charleston to a 2-2 deadlock after seven innings, but solid defensive play in extra innings would wrap up the third victory of the day for Charleston.

The Fighting Falcons tagged Golden Eagle hurler Stefanie Rossman, making her fourth appearance of the day, for two runs headed into the top of the seventh inning for what seemed to be a comfortable lead.

UC strung together three hits with back-to-back RBI singles by leading hitter Logan Tretick and Sierra Curley to knot the game at two runs apiece sending the game into extra innings after Rossman sat down FSU in order. Charleston's bats came alive in the eighth inning with freshmen Samantha Herndon and Kimberly Giannini smashing RBI hits for a 4-2 lead heading into the home half of the eighth.

The 23rd inning of the day proved nothing for Rossman as she fought valiantly against the Fairmont State offense. She would allow one runner to score in the eighth to get Fairmont State within one run, but would force a ground out with the winning run on second base to hand the University of Charleston a 4-3 victory.

Charleston now awaits a rematch against Kanawha Valley rival WV State at 10:00 am on Saturday.
