Shepherdstown, W.Va. - The homestanding Rams slugged key hits when it was needed in each game to secure a doubleheader sweep of the University of Charleston softball team 5-4 and 3-1, Sunday afternoon.
In the first contest, freshman
Sierra Curley (Moreno Valley,CA/Canyon Springs) had a breakout performance at the plate going 2-for-2 and collecting all four RBIs for the Golden Eagles. The four runs were enough to keep UC within striking distance for the win as the teams ended regular play tied 4-4 to send the game into extra innings.
Despite a strong performance from pitching star
Stefanie Rossman (Concord, OH/Riverside) Shepherd was able to pull out the victory by capitalizing on a fielding error to extend the game forcing a nail-biting ending. The Rams would go on to load the bases before Tiffany Farmer drew a walk to plate the game winning run for SU.
Charleston would be unable to take advantage of three Shepherd errors in the second contest as the teams took a 1-1 deadlock into the sixth inning. After a long day on the mound Rossman kept UC in contention to the end, but the Rams would find their stroke in the sixth inning to tag her for two runs which would be enough to hold on for the 3-1 win.
The University of Charleston would only manage one hit in the final two innings as
Amber Jarvis (Girard, OH/Mathews) would finish the game as the only Golden Eagle with multiple hits in the game with a 2-for-3 performance.
Charleston looks to snap its current four-game losing skid as they now prepare for a road doubleheader against conference opponent Concord on April 5 at 5:00 pm.
