VIENNA, W.Va. - After winning three-straight games on Friday to advance to the WVIAC tournament championship round the University of Charleston softball team was unable to pull another upset as WV State eliminated UC with a 4-0 defeat.
West Virginia State hurler Kelsey Lorraine tossed a two-hit shutout, helping the Yellow Jackets advance to the finals of the consolation bracket against Shepherd.
For UC, Sydney Finley and Sierra Curley picked up the team’s hits on the afternoon.
Lorraine went the distance, striking out three and walking two in the contest. UC hurler Stefanie Rossman pitched six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out five. The five strikeouts brings Rossman among the nation's elite pitchers with 336 strikeouts for the season.
WVSU got all four runs in the third frame. Ramey bunted for a hit with one away. Hilton followed her up with a bunt single. Best doubled home both runners and promptly stole third. Hyatt singled her home and eventually Harper singled home Hyatt for the run total.
Two UC threats ended with double plays.
WV State would go on later in the day to defeat No. 2 seed Shepherd before forcing two games against eventual champion and top seed WV Wesleyan.
The Golden Eagles conclude the season with a 27-23 overall record. For their efforts over the three-day tournament Rossman and leading hitter Logan Tretick were honored as selections to the WVIAC All-Tournament Team.
