Men's Soccer Turns in Strong Performance in 3-1 Win

Rob Vincent

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Rob Vincent continued to show why he is the reining WVIAC Player of the Year as he hammered home a goal and an assist as the University of Charleston men's soccer team grabbed their first conference win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Wheeling Jesuit, Saturday afternoon.

Charleston (1-1) struck for the only goal in the opening half as Harry Machacha found the net with a header off a well placed corner kick by Vincent in the 34th minute for a 1-0 edge. The UC offense was relentless all evening in dominating possession of the ball and continually attacking the backline of the Cardinal defense.

The Golden Eagles took some breathing room when notoriously strong defender Dan Walmsley showed he can quickly become an offensive threat with his six foot five inch frame in the box. Walmsley took advantage of a great cross in front of the goalie by Marshall Ngobidi off a Dion Peters free kick to slam the second goal of the contest and all but secure the win for Charleston.

Wheeling Jesuit found some success late in the contest in firing long passes into the UC defense trying to find a way to take advantage of numbers down the field, yet the Golden Eagle defense proved to be too strong on this night. Charleston sealed the win as Vincent and Peters, the 2010 and 2009 WVIAC Players of the Year, found their old groove on a 2-on-1 breakaway in front of the net allowing Vincent to slip a shot past the WJU goalkeeper for the 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals would tally a mark on the scoreboard going away as Andrew Hickey got a short free kick over the Golden Eagle wall and past keeper Sean Teepen, but it was too little too late as Charleston celebrated the 3-1 win after the final whisle blew on a great day of UC Athletics action.

The victory also marked a milestone for Head Coach Chris Grassie as it booked his first win on the sidelines for the Golden Eagles.

UC will continue its conference slate on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 5:00 pm when they travel to Davis & Elkins.
