Volleyball Claims Important Regional Win Over Indiana (Pa.)

Brenna Youlton

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
To have a chance at reaching the NCAA Regional Tournament in November teams must prove they are one of the top teams within the region in out-of-conference matchups, which is exactly what the University of Charleston volleyball team accomplished with its 3-0 drubbing of Indiana (Pa.), Tuesday night.

Charleston (4-5) played their most complete contest of the season against the Crimson Hawks (6-3) committing just 13 errors in the three-set match. By contrast an aggressive UC attack forced IUP into 12 errors in the second set alone.

Junior Brenna Youlton (Ontario, Canada/John McGregor Secondary) had arguably her top career match as she fired 11 kills in 18 attempts with just one error for an attack percentage of .556. Youlton's energy at the net paced the Golden Eagles in the victory, while Cara Hibbs-Leyva (San Diego, CA/Academy of Our Lady of Peace) followed with eight kills and three digs.

UC showed more bounce in their step than Indiana (Pa.) from the time warm-ups started more than two hours before the game. The high energy continued into the match as the Golden Eagles jumped all over IUP in the first set to run away with a 25-15 score that would carry on into a 25-16 second set. The frustrated Crimson Hawk offense was unable to find their game in the second set as they committed 12 errors to just 10 kills for a negative hitting percentage.

In the third set, IUP showed why they are still a top team in the region by battling with UC until an 11-11 deadlock. Charleston showed it was their night on their court as they went on a 14-8 run to seal the win.

Katie Williams (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) continued the hot start to her senior season with 18 assists and five digs.

The University of Charleston returns to the floor at the Davis & Elkins Tournament this weekend in Elkins, W.Va. beginning Friday, Sept. 16.
