Volleyball Stumbles Against Slippery Rock

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - At times the University of Charleston volleyball team showed glimpses of greatness that head coach Bren Stevens knows here team is capable of, yet regional power Slippery Rock proved to be too much of a task as the visitors took a 3-0 victory, Tuesday night.

Charleston (4-10) came out on fire in the opening set realing off five consecutive points for 20-15 advantage. It looked as if it was going to be the Golden Eagles night on their home court as the bounces were going their way and their offensive firepower was keeping The Rock(14-0) off balance for much of the first set. SRU did not fold as they showed why they are one of just 13 teams in NCAA Division II with a spotless record.

Slippery Rock rallied behind the serves of Janna Reilly who led her squad back into contention knotting the contest at 23-23. After trading attack errors to force extra points a key service error by UC handed Slippery Rock the slit of hope they were looking for as the visitors capitalized on a Kaylee Smith kill from Reilly to sneak away with a hard fought 26-24 first set.

The Golden Eagles were unable to duplicate the results of the first set as they recorded a negative hitting percentage in the next two sets as SRU took 25-11 and 25-9 wins to seal the contest and keep their perfect record alive.

Cara Hibbs-Leyva (San Diego, CA / Academy of Our Lady of Peace) paced the effort for UC with nine kills, while Kelsey Eby (Portland, OR / Central Catholic) managed nine assists on the evening.

For Slippery Rock Kaylee Smith ended the contest with a .609 hitting percentage on 15 kills and just one error, while Kristy Lake managed a 10 kill and 11 dig effort.

Charleston will return to the court on Thursday, September 20 for a 6:00 pm match at Mountain State University in Beckley, WV.
