Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
The University of Charleston men's soccer team is starting to find its mid-season form as captain Rob Vincent (Liverpool, England) struck for two goals in a dominant 3-0 performance against the University of the District of Columbia, Monday afternoon.

In the opening half Charleston (4-3) continued its game plan of controlling possession as it has against every opponent this season, while UDC (4-2-1) was content with stocking their backfield deep and playing defense to setup a chance on offense. The contending game plans led to UC blasting nine shots in the opening period to just two for the Firebirds, yet maintaining the scoreless deadlock after 45 minutes of play.

2010 WVIAC Player of the Year Vincent was finally able to break thru the defensive alignment of UDC in the 56th minute. All-WVIAC midfielder Ryan Osborne (Wakefield, England) found Vincent cutting to the left post and played a long cross from the right side that landed just in front of the out-stretched arms of Firebird goalkeeper Kyle Heatherington. Vincent beat Heatherington to the ball to just touch it into the net for the 1-0 advantage.

The score allowed UC to relax on their offensive pressure, which seemingly opened more holes in the Firebird defense as the Golden Eagles were able to light up the scoreboard again just seven minutes later. Vincent was credited with his second goal of the contest on a touch in front of the net after a group collision that took Heatherington out of the play. The ball was fed in front of the net from 35 yards out by Kyle McCarty (Cincinnati, OH) and Vincent took on three defenders and the goalkeeper in front of the net. The ball took a long hop off the field turf causing the entire group to collide with the ball bounding off a defender and Vincent into the net setting the score at 2-0.

Charleston had the game in hand and was playing possession when Marshall Ngobidi (Nassau, Bahamas ) found himself uncontested at the top of the box in the 82nd minute. Ngobidi wound up and slammed a hard shot past UDC backup goalie Alex Vert who had come on after the second goal and collision. The Ngobidi goal wrapped up a strong performance for the University of Charleston to hand the home team its second consecutive win.

The Golden Eagles get little reprieve as they travel to face Ohio Dominican (3-2-1) on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 pm. The Panthers handed UC one of just four losses in 2010 with a 2-1 OT decision.
