Volleyball Finds It's Intensity in 3-1 Win over Shepherd

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston volleyball team brought the one thing it had been lacking last night to the contest against Shepherd....ENERGY. Leading to a 3-1 victory over the Rams, Saturday afternoon.

Victoria Severo (Meadville, PA) sparked the solid afternoon for the Golden Eagles with 12 kills in just 17 attempts for a team-high .529 hitting percentage to go along with a solo block and five block assists. She was credited with back-to-back blocks to end the first set with UC ahead 25-22, which set the pace for the entire team.

Charleston held the Rams to .147 hitting with six errors in the second set as the home squad used an 11-3 run to put distance on the scoreboard en route to a 25-18 victory. The teams were even in set three but Shepherd got some distance late to pull out a 25-20 win with both teams hitting over 20 percent to force a fourth set.

In the deciding set the Eddie King Gym crowd got loud as UC ran out to a 4-1 advantage before SU fought back to deadlock the teams at 8-8. Before the visitors could blink Charleston head coach Jason Kozak went back to calling Severo's number and she delivered as the Golden Eagles ran away 16-10 and never looked back. A pair of freshman in Samantha Scripter (Knoxville, TN) and Katharine Furlong (Sedona, AZ) took control of the final set to lift Charleston to the 25-21 victory to seal the game.

Leading scorer Malleri Hardison (Uniontown, PA) kept pace with Severo with 12 kills, while adding eight digs on the afternoon. Scripter closed the contest with six kills, while Furlong tacked on eight to her career numbers.

Kelsey Eby (Portland, OR) had a strong performance by distributing the offense across eight hitters for 43 assists to go with her team-high 13 digs and two block assists.

UC returns to the court at home against conference rival WV State on Wednesday, Oct. 17 for a 7:00 pm contest.
